Table Mountain National Park is an accessible park; however, incidents occasionally occur due to social and economic challenges, resulting in crime in the beautiful Cape region. To address this, the Take Back Our Mountains volunteers conduct visitor safety patrols in high-risk areas, collaborate closely with neighborhood watches, and provide valuable information to authorities.
For both local and international visitors, please take note of the following guidelines:
- Engage in activities in groups or join existing hiking/running clubs and tour guide operators.
- Be prepared for inclement weather and familiarize yourself with your routes, allowing enough time for your journey.
- Inform someone about your planned route and expected time of return.
- Always carry an ample supply of water.
- Remain cautious during sunrise or sunset, as crime incidents tend to occur during these times.
- Avoid leaving any valuables in your vehicles or on display during your activities.
- Consider participating in existing events in areas such as Redhill/Blackhill Mountains, Houtbay, Karbonkelberg, and the lower slopes of Lionshead and Tablemountain in case of emergencies.

The TBOM Volunteers demonstrate their passion for environmental preservation by regularly conducting cleanups in various areas such as Table Mountain National Park, city areas, beaches, and wetlands. It is important to address the issue of litter as it causes pollution, which can lead to harmful consequences for both humans and animals. Approximately 60% of water pollution is attributed to litter, which contaminates soil and freshwater sources. Moreover, litter can also contribute to air pollution. Wetlands, known for their diverse plant and animal species, serve as essential habitats and offer benefits such as flood protection, water quality improvement, erosion control, natural resources, recreation, and aesthetic value. Notably, in the Masiphumelele Wetlands alone, we have successfully removed over 1000 bags of litter in 2023. To amplify our efforts, we have partnered with Blue Ribbon through the Eco Warriors initiative, enabling us to conduct regular cleanups on a monthly basis.
The Western Cape, with its majestic mountain ranges, breathtaking natural beauty, and captivating coastal views, provides countless opportunities for adventure. Cape Town, often referred to as the adventure capital of South Africa, is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts who embrace an active lifestyle. Take Back Our Mountains (TBOM) is an initiative that unites a diverse group of locals and international visitors who share a love for the outdoors. TBOM serves as a platform for hikers, runners, and cyclists to participate in organized events and foster new connections. We invite you to browse through our photo gallery showcasing previous TBOM events held under the umbrella of the Take Back Our Mountains Movement.
Take Back Our Mountains places great importance on community service and acknowledges the significance of supporting the local community. In addition to biodiversity conservation efforts, our organization is committed to giving back through various initiatives.
One of our key endeavors is organizing environmental tours specifically catered to disadvantaged communities and children. Through these tours, we aim to showcase the natural beauty of our mountains and provide educational experiences for those who may not have had access to such opportunities before.
Furthermore, we offer our expertise in leading hikes and conducting educational environmental tours for schools. By doing so, we not only encourage students to engage with nature but also promote awareness and understanding of environmental issues.
In addition to working with schools, we actively collaborate with non-profit organizations (NPOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) by leading hikes and providing our assistance. We have participated in numerous outreach programs, and you can view photos from these programs in our gallery.
Through these community-focused efforts, Take Back Our Mountains seeks to create a positive impact, inspire a love for nature, and foster a greater sense of environmental responsibility among individuals and communities
In our city, particularly the Newlands forests and Table Mountain, we are facing a significant issue of bark stripping. This illegal activity poses a serious threat to our indigenous forests, with numerous trees being ring barked. Additionally, the picking of proteas and other herbs on Table Mountain is a common occurrence. The Wetlands area in the Central and South sections of Table Mountain is also known for the presence of snares. To tackle these problems, volunteers from Take Back Our Mountains regularly conduct bark stripping and snare tracking operations. However, we need equipment, such as night vision heat detection, to enhance our effectiveness in patrolling for bark stripping. Donations towards acquiring this equipment would be greatly appreciated.
Take Back Our Mountains also contribute to providing food for the needy and homeless. Given the economic challenges and inflation, many individuals are facing food insecurity. To address this issue, we organize food distribution in various areas and support existing feeding schemes. We are fortunate to receive weekly bread donations from Blue Ribbon, which we distribute to those in need. However, we welcome donations to ensure the continuity of this movement and enable us to reach even more people in need of food assistance. Your support is greatly appreciated in keeping this important initiative going.
